In 2018, following the US’s decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem and recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the Australian government decided to recognise West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital but held off on moving its embassy until a peace settlement was achieved. Australia’s reversal of the decision drew criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid.
