Influential Iraqi Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr called upon the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League on Thursday to meet over Quran burnings in Sweden and to show their support for Islam. In the same statement he called upon countries to outlaw the burning of the Quran and said that the Christian man who burned the holy book does not represent Christianity and that the Iraqi government must protect Iraqi Christians. Sadr’s supporters stormed Sweden’s embassy in Iraq on Thursday and set it on fire in response to a plan to burn a Quran in front of the Iraqi embassy in Sweden. Last month an Iraqi refugee burned a copy of the Quran in front of a Swedish mosque, leading to an outcry in the Muslim world.
