Iraqis torch Swedish embassy in Baghdad at protest over planned Quran burning

Hundreds of protesters stormed the gates of the Swedish embassy in Baghdad in the early hours of Thursday and set it alight in protest over the Swedish police granting permission for a demonstration in which another burning of the holy Quran is planned to take place. Demonstrators waved flags and held posters of Iraqi Shia cleric and political leader Moqtada al-Sadr as plumes of smoke rose from the building. The incident comes weeks after a man set fire to pages of the Quran outside Stockholm’s main mosque, leading to widespread outrage across the Muslim world. The Swedish foreign ministry in a statement condemned the attack on its embassy saying it constitutes a serious violation of the Vienna Convention.
