Palestinian and Israeli envoys clash at UN Security Council over ICJ opinion on Israeli occupation

Palestinian envoy Riyad Mansour and Israel’s Gilad Erdan clashed at a UN Security Council meeting yesterday over the UN’s decision to request an opinion from the International Court of Justice on the legal consequences of Israel’s occupation of Palestine. The UN voted 87 to 26, with 53 abstentions, in favour of the resolution on 31 December last year, with support for the request coming even from Arab states that have recently normalised ties with Israel.
