Protesters gathered in front of the Swedish consulate in Istanbul on Saturday hours after a far-right Danish-Swedish politician received permission from the police to stage a protest outside the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm, where he gave a xenophobic speech and burned a copy of the Quran. Turkey summoned the Swedish ambassador to Ankara ahead of protests on Friday and announced on Saturday it had cancelled a visit by Sweden’s defence minister aimed at removing Ankara's objections to Sweden's Nato bid. Sweden's foreign minister, Tobias Billstrom, said on Twitter that Islamophobic provocations were appalling, but emphasised there was ''a far-reaching freedom of expression'' in his country.
